‘Luitpold von Bayern’ (‘Luitpold, Prince Regent of Bavaria’)

Bronze, dated 1900.
Size 58,5 x 39,5 cm.
An identical cast by Von Hildebrand was displayed at the ‘Internationalen Kunst-Ausstellung‘ of the Münchener Secession in 1900 in the Glaspalast.
Other casts are owned by the Bayerichen Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Neue Pinakothek), the Wittelsbacher Ausgleichsfonds and the Berchtesgaden Royal Castle.
Luitpold Karl Joseph Wilhelm Ludwig (1821 – 1912), Prince Regent of Bavaria , was the de facto ruler of Bavaria from 1886 to 1912, due to the incapacity of his nephews, King Ludwig II and King Otto. In the reign of Luitpold, Bavaria prospered under a liberal government and Munich became a cultural centre of Europe.
Identical 1900-cast by Von Hildebrand in bronze, and a plaster cast dated 1903, both in the possession of the Neu Pinakothek.
