Lothar Bechstein
Lothar Bechstein (1884–1936) was a Swiss painter born in Solothurn, Switzerland. He studied from 1905 to 1907 at the Art Academy in Munich under Peter Halm and Angelo Jank. After his studies, Bechstein, a member of the art association ‘Münchens Secession‘, travelled to Vienna, Paris, Algeria and the North Sea coast. Frequently he was represented at the Grosse Münchener Kunstausstellung in the Glaspalast. Other exhibitions in which he took part include Koll.-Ausstellung in Brakl’s Kunsthaus München 1913; Moderne Galerie Thannhauser, München 1922; the Düsseldorf-Münchener Kunstausstellung, Kunstpalast Düsseldorf 1932 and the Gedenkausstellung in Münchner Kunstversteigererhaus 1937. At the XIV Biennale in Venice 1924 he displayed ‘Donne presso il mare’ (‘Women at sea’).
Bechstein painted landscapes and especially figures in a classical style. He typically depicted men and women in a plain and humble manner. Around 1929/1930 he created, under the supervision of Paul Ludwig Troost, four large paintings for the Ocean steamer ‘Europa‘. In 1933 he created a series of frescos for the Urnenhalle in the Munich Ostfriedhof and in 1936 for the Kaffeehaus (now ‘Park Café’) in the alten Botanischen Garten in Munich; this park was designed by Paul Ludwig Troost.
The ‘Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen’ owns 12 paintings by Lothar Bechstein, most of which are landscapes. Other works by Bechstein are possessed by the ‘Kunstsammlung Duisburg und Gießen’ and the ‘Moderne Galerie Venedig‘.
Lothar Bechstein died at the age of 52 in 1936 in Munich, a year before the opening of the first Great German Art Exhibition.
